Nice To Find a Niche

For years people have asked me what my niche is.

Honestly, it’s been one of the hardest things to answer because I’ve always felt that I could write for anyone, about anything. However, replying ‘I don’t really have one, I can write about anything,’ isn’t the great answer I always thought it was.

There’s no problem in being ABLE to write in numerous styles, however, having a niche that you can focus on makes you sound so much more professional.

I was delighted to figure out what I feel most passionately about writing – children’s products/services and health and fitness.

I’ve always loved writing, and how it can help people. I was inspired at a young age by my broadsheet-reading uncle and my Dad, two people with a love of reading, who encouraged me to read, and write, as much as possible.

My subject choices at school led me to follow the path towards becoming a journalist.

Fast forward to 2004, and I went to the University College for the Creative Arts (formerly the Surrey Institute of Art and Design,) to study journalism, before landing a job as a journalist at the Milton Keynes Citizen.

In 2011 I started getting into weight training at the gym and found that I quickly loved going and being able to make progress. I listened to the guys I trained with and was fascinated learning about how to train individual muscles/muscle groups and target areas in different ways to achieve whatever goals I had.

On the work front, I joined the Argos Copywriting team in 2015 writing predominantly for the Freetime team (on ranges including Toys, Nursery, and Sports.)

And that’s where my love of writing for children’s toys and personal fitness took off. I was writing product descriptions and page openers for a number of Argos’ own brands -including Opti and Chad Valley – while improving product descriptions for the likes of Men’s Health and Hasbro.

And I loved thinking like a customer, writing things that I would want to hear if I was the one buying the items, writing in different styles, and really getting people excited about buying from us, and how it could benefit them and their families.

After being made redundant in October 2020, and starting my own business, one of my first clients was MuscleSquad, an extremely well-run, and successful, fitness equipment store – and also a sponsor of Luton Town FC.

As a lot of you know, two of my biggest loves in life, away from writing, are my children Rupert (5) and Emilia (4) and going to the gym, so it’s no surprise that these are the things I want to niche into with my writing.

I’ve already written more than 250 blogs on being a Dad, as I spent 18 months at home with them and now serve as the primary parent as well as running the business and supporting my hard-working wife.

Now, I’m looking to connect with people across the health and fitness and children’s toys/services sectors to help them sell their products, market their businesses, or communicate with their audiences better. If you know anyone who could benefit from working with a copywriter who has 17 years of professional writing experience then tell them to message me, and we can set up a coffee (either virtually or in person.)
