What is a Copywriter?

I’m a Copywriter.

For me, it’s a simple term, I write copy. However, there are so many people who are still unaware of not only what a Copywriter does, but even what copy is. So, I thought I would do my best to explain exactly what it is I, and other copywriters do.

1: What is ‘copy’? In its simplest form copy is just words. It could be a blog post, it could be words on your website describing you and your business, or it could be a snappy marketing headline. It’s not to be confused with imitation as the last thing a good copywriter will do is copy anything that’s been done – it’s always original, and unique to whoever we’re working with.

2: Copywriter, not Copyrighter: I’ve had so many people ask me what a copywriter does. When I explain what it is I often hear ‘Oh, I thought it was a legal thing.’ Whereas we may have knowledge of copyrights or copyrighting we are not legal advisers. Copywriting and copyrighting, for now, remain two very different disciplines.

3: When do you need a Copywriter?  Whenever you’re lost for words – a copywriter often won’t be. So, if you can talk about your business for hours but can’t then translate that into a succinct description, or series of blog posts, then you need a copywriter. If you always push those writing tasks to the bottom of your to-do list then it’s likely you want a wordsmith. However, there are a few variations on the type of copywriter you may need. I’ll do my best to break them down as succinctly as possible.

  • SEO Copywriters: Absolutely brilliant at what they do. One of their main jobs is to research keywords and trending topics to make sure that your writing is optimised for the best performance in a search engine. They, of course, offer a range of other tools in their arsenal, including writing meta descriptions, to give your business a boost.
  • Technical Copywriters: Great at writing important and necessary documentation including tenders, bids and white papers, these writers can help simplify and explain something perfectly for an audience.
  • Creative Copywriters: These are the types of writer you need when you want to write a memorable and punchy headline, a blog post that will capture someone’s imagination, or text that really jumps off the page and makes people want to buy your products/use your services.
  • Social Media Copywriter: Perfect for people who want to pep up their posting. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (or one of the other 100+ platforms) good copywriters can find out about you, your business, and your products and get your messages out in the perfect tone, to the perfect audience getting you the business you deserve.

Of course, there are writers for different industries, but I don’t have time to go into all of those (and you all don’t have time.) However, you should have a better understanding of what it is a Copywriter does/can do for you. If not, give me a call.
